Your agency has asked for access to MongoDB Atlas. You don't need to share your password for it. MongoDB Atlas lets you add them with their own login, choose exactly what they can do, and remove them when the project ends. These are the clicks, checked against MongoDB Atlas's own help pages in November 2026.
Which role to choose
Pick the narrowest role that lets your agency do the work. Project Owner is usually the right one.
| Role | What it allows | For an agency |
|---|---|---|
| Project Owner | Everything in the project: clusters, database users, the IP access list, backups, data and who has access. | Usually the right one |
| Project Data Access Admin | Creates and drops databases, collections and indexes, and edits documents in Data Explorer. Cannot change clusters or database users. | If the work needs it |
| Project Read Only | Views clusters, metrics, activity and users. Cannot open Data Explorer or change anything. | If the work needs it |
| Organization Owner | Root access to the whole organization: every project, its users and settings, and billing. | If the work needs it |
Add your agency to MongoDB Atlas
Organization Owner
Root access to the whole organization: every project, its users and settings, and billing.
- Sign in to MongoDB Atlas. If it isn't already shown, select your organization from the Organizations menu in the navigation bar.
- Click Applications in the sidebar under Identity & Access, then click Invite Users.
- Enter your agency's email address in the box and press Enter.
- Click the role dropdown, select the Organization Owner checkbox, then click Add Users to Organization.
Only an Organization Owner can add another. Atlas emails your agency an invitation that expires after 30 days.
Project Owner or Project Data Access Admin or Project Read Only
- Sign in to MongoDB Atlas. If it isn't already shown, select your organization from the Organizations menu in the navigation bar.
- Click All Projects in the sidebar under Identity & Access and select your project. Then click Project Identity & Access in the sidebar under Security.
- On the Users tab, click Invite to Project. Enter your agency's email address and press Enter.
- Click the role dropdown, select the Project Owner checkbox, then click Grant Access.
Only a Project Owner can invite. Atlas emails your agency an invitation that expires after 30 days; if your agency is already in your organization, it gets access straight away instead.
How you both know it worked
With a organization owner request, your agency sees your project as active on their side once you accept it. With a project owner, MongoDB Atlas emails your agency an invitation from mongodb.com. Once they accept it, they show in your MongoDB Atlas account's list of people with access, where you can see or change their role at any time.
Remove access when the project ends
Organization Owner
- In Atlas, click Applications in the sidebar under Identity & Access and open the Users tab.
- Click the trash icon to the right of your agency's email address, then click Remove User from Organization.
- In each project, delete any API keys and database users your agency created.
Project Owner or Project Data Access Admin or Project Read Only
- In Atlas, open your project and click Project Identity & Access in the sidebar under Security.
- On the Users tab, click the trash icon to the right of your agency's email address, then click Remove User.
- On the API Keys tab, remove any API keys your agency created. Then click Database & Network Access in the sidebar under Security and delete any database users your agency added.
Do you have to share your password?
No. Every step above uses MongoDB Atlas's own invite, so your agency signs in with their own account, your two-step verification stays on, and anything they change is recorded under their name. How to give a developer access without sharing your password covers the other accounts agencies usually ask for.
Doing this for every client?
Agencies can send each client one GetSetKeys link instead of a page like this. It walks the client through MongoDB Atlas and the other platforms the project needs, and checks that each step is done.
